What a Base Layer Actually Does
The job is moisture transport, not insulation. A base layer pulls sweat away from the skin (the wicking part) and spreads it across a larger surface area where the jersey can evaporate it. Without that step, sweat pools against the skin, chills you on descents, and softens the chamois area.
Insulation is the secondary effect. A heavier base layer traps a thin layer of warm air against the skin, but only after wicking is doing its job. A heavy cotton t-shirt insulates too — and soaks.

Merino Wool: Odor-Resistant, Slow-Drying
Merino fibres are fine enough to bend against the skin, so the wool feels soft rather than scratchy. The natural crimp of the fibre traps insulating air, and the cuticle structure resists bacterial growth — which is why merino base layers can be worn for several rides between washes without smelling.
The trade-off is drying speed. Merino holds roughly 30% of its weight in water before it feels wet, and takes longer to release it. On a long, sweaty ride in cool conditions, merino is the right call; in hot, humid weather, it stays damp.

Synthetic: Fast-Drying, Less Odor Control
Polyester and polypropylene base layers wick faster than merino and dry in a fraction of the time. They are the right pick for hot weather and high-intensity rides, where the goal is to move sweat out, not trap warmth.
The penalty is odor. Synthetic base layers smell after one ride, and the smell compounds across wash cycles. Treated fabrics (Polygiene, silver-ion) delay the problem but do not eliminate it.

Fit and Seam Placement
A base layer should sit flat against the skin — looser than the jersey, but not baggy. If it gaps anywhere, the wicking effect drops sharply, because sweat has nowhere to spread.
Flatlock seams are flattened to reduce chafing, but the only seam that really matters is at the shoulder, where the jersey's pockets and the strap of a backpack or hydration vest bear down. Everywhere else, a flatlock seam is invisible under a cycling jersey.
