The Leather Era

Early bicycles had wooden saddles — shaped planks, sometimes padded with horsehair, sprung on steel. They were brutal. As the Safety Bicycle took over in the 1890s, leather became the standard saddle material: a top grain of cowhide stretched over a steel frame and a cantle plate, with a tensioning bolt at the nose.

In 1980 Selle Italia introduced the Turbo — a moulded plastic shell with thin foam padding and a leather-look cover. It was a revolution. The Turbo was light (around 250g), waterproof, did not need breaking in, and did not change shape with the weather.

Almost every road saddle since then descends from the Turbo's geometry: a rigid plastic or carbon shell, a thin layer of foam or gel, a synthetic cover. Selle San Marco, Unicanitor, and Specialized all followed within a decade.
