Why a bike computer beats a phone
A modern bike computer does one thing — record and display ride data — and does it well for 15–30 hours on a charge. A phone does everything else well and ride tracking badly: the GPS is less accurate on a moving bike, the screen is unreadable in direct sun, and running the GPS + screen at brightness kills the battery in two to three hours. On a hot day, the phone will also thermal-throttle and shut the camera off.
The other reason is barometric altitude. Bike computers have a barometer that gives accurate gradient and ascent data — far more reliable than the GPS-derived elevation a phone produces. For any structured training or climbing, the barometer is the feature that justifies the device.

GPS, navigation, and routing
Turn-by-turn navigation used to be a flagship feature; it is now standard on mid-range color units. The question is how good the routing engine is — does it pick cyclist-appropriate roads, does it reroute when you go off-course, and how readable is the map at the speed you ride?
For riders who plan routes in RideWithGPS, Komoot, or Strava, look for a computer that imports those routes natively (most modern Garmins and Wahoos do). Battery life claims from manufacturers are accurate at low brightness with the backlight off. Real-world battery at full brightness, with routing and sensors active, is typically 60–70% of the claimed number. If your longest ride is 8 hours, a 15-hour computer gives you a safe margin.
