Lumens aren't everything
Lumens measure raw light output — how much comes out of the LED. It tells you almost nothing useful on its own. Two lights with the same lumen rating can perform completely differently depending on the optic: one throws a tight spotlight that lights a narrow patch far ahead, the other spreads a wide flood that covers the road close to the wheel. On a dark road, the wide flood is the one you want.
The honest number is lux at a given distance — how much light actually lands on the road. Very few consumer lights publish lux, so the practical move is to read beamshot photographs from reviewers and ignore the lumen arms race. A 600-lumen light with a well-shaped beam is plenty for road riding at 30 km/h; a 1,500-lumen spot beam is worse, not better.

Beam pattern and optics
A good road beam is asymmetric: it lights the road ahead wide and bright, with a horizontal cut-off at the top so it does not blind oncoming traffic. This is the same design principle car headlights use. Symmetric round beams throw light upward into trees and into drivers' eyes, which feels bright but is less useful and more antisocial.
Mountain bike lights are different: you want a focused spot for distance reading plus a wide flood for peripheral awareness. Many mountain riders run a helmet light (spot) and a bar light (flood) — together they give depth perception that a single light cannot.

Day flash vs night steady
Daytime running lights work the same way car DRLs do — a high-frequency, high-intensity flash that breaks the visual clutter of a sunny street and makes you register in a driver's peripheral vision. Set to the brightest flash mode, a 200-lumen front and a 50-lumen rear make a meaningful difference in how early drivers spot you, especially at intersections.
At night, the rules flip. A flashing front light at night is harder for drivers to judge distance and speed from — a steady beam gives them a fixed point to track. Use steady mode on both ends once the sun is down. Reserve the pulse modes for dusk, when ambient light is fading and contrast is the problem.

Battery, mounting, and side visibility
Real-world battery life is roughly half of what the box claims, because manufacturers test on the lowest usable mode. Read the runtime at the brightness you will actually use — typically the second-highest steady setting — and treat the max-burst mode as a short-use feature for descents.
Tool-free silicone or cam-strap mounts let you move a light between bikes in seconds. Garmin-style quarter-turn mounts are more secure but proprietary. Side visibility — cutouts in the body, a translucent strip, or an amber side lens — is what saves you at intersections, and it is the one feature most riders never check before buying.
