  • Wash your bike every 2–4 weeks (more often in winter/wet conditions). A clean bike lets you spot wear and damage early — cracked frames, worn brake pads, loose bolts — before they become failures
  • The 5-step process: rinse, degrease drivetrain, wash frame, rinse, dry+re-lube. Tools: bucket, mild soap, degreaser, soft brushes, chain-cleaning tool. No high-pressure washers (they blast grease out of bearings)
  • Don't use high pressure near bearings: hubs, bottom bracket, headset. Water forced past seals causes bearing failure. Use low-pressure hose or a bucket
  • After washing: re-lube the chain (the wash strips lubricant), check brake pad alignment, and wipe the frame with a dry cloth. A clean, lubed bike is noticeably faster and quieter

The 5-step process

1. Rinse: low-pressure hose or bucket of water, top to bottom. This removes loose dirt and prevents scratching when you scrub. Don't use a high-pressure washer — it blasts grease out of bearings (hubs, bottom bracket, headset) and causes premature failure.

2. Degrease drivetrain: apply degreaser to the chain, cassette, chainrings, and derailleur pulleys. Use the chain-cleaning tool on the chain (back-pedal while the tool scrubs). Scrub the cassette and chainrings with a brush. Let it sit 2–3 minutes.

3. Wash frame: soapy water, top to bottom. Start at the handlebars and work down — cleanest to dirtiest. Use a soft brush or sponge on the frame, a stiffer brush on the wheels and brakes. Pay attention to the underside of the down tube, the bottom bracket area, and the brake calipers — these collect the most grime.

4. Rinse: low-pressure water, top to bottom, until all soap and degreaser is gone. Residual degreaser can contaminate brake pads (disc brakes especially — if degreaser gets on the rotor, clean it with isopropyl alcohol).

5. Dry and re-lube: bounce the bike to shake off water, wipe the frame with a microfiber cloth. Apply chain lube (one drop per roller), let it penetrate 2 minutes, then wipe off excess. Re-lubing after every wash is essential — the wash strips all lubricant from the chain.

What to check while cleaning

A bike wash is also an inspection. While the bike is clean, check: tire condition (cuts, embedded glass, tread wear), brake pad thickness (replace at 1mm remaining), chain wear (use a chain checker — replace at 0.5%), spoke tension (pluck each spoke — they should sound similar), bolt torque (especially stem, seatpost clamp, and brake caliper bolts), and frame integrity (look for cracks, especially around the head tube, bottom bracket, and chainstay junction).

Catching a cracked frame, a worn brake pad, or a loose bolt during a wash prevents a failure on the road. The 20-minute monthly wash is the best preventive maintenance a cyclist can do.
