- BMC (Bicycle Manufacturing Company) is a Swiss brand founded in 1986, headquartered in Grenchen. BMC is engineering-first and pro-team heavy: they sponsor Tudor Pro Cycling and have historically sponsored BMC Racing / CCC Team. BMC is known for the impec Lab (their in-house carbon wind-tunnel and test facility)
- Road hierarchy: Teammachine (all-around race, the flagship) → Roadmachine (endurance, the volume seller). Unlike most brands, BMC's endurance bike (Roadmachine) outsells the race bike — the Roadmachine's MTT micro-suspension is a genuine differentiator
- Gravel: URS (unrestricted, adventure gravel with MTT suspension, 45 mm) and Kaius (race gravel, lighter, 44 mm). BMC is the only major brand with two distinct carbon gravel platforms split by adventure vs race
- MTB: Fourstroke (XC full-suspension, with autodrop seatpost) and Twostroke/Threestroke (hardtails). BMC's MTB presence is small but the Fourstroke's integrated autodrop (auto-lowering seatpost) is unique

Road — Teammachine, Roadmachine
Teammachine R: BMC's all-around race bike, the bike of Tudor Pro Cycling. The R01 (2023 redesign) consolidated BMC's aero and lightweight platforms into one frame — aero-influenced tube shapes at 800 g. The ICS (Integrated Cockpit System) is BMC's one-piece carbon bar+stem with internal routing. The 'ONE' tier is the top (Premium Carbon); TWO/THREE are heavier layups.
Roadmachine: BMC's endurance bike and the volume seller. The defining feature is MTT (Micro Travel Technology) — a micro-suspension element at the seatstay/seat tube junction that provides 10 mm of compliance. Unlike Trek's IsoSpeed or Specialized's Future Shock, MTT is elastomer-based (no pivot, no maintenance) and tuned for small-bump compliance. The Roadmachine has 33 mm tire clearance — enough for rough roads and light gravel.
BMC road family. Premium Carbon is the top layup; 01/02/03 tiers encode carbon grade + groupset.
| Model | Category | Frame weight | Key feature | Tire clearance | Starting price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Teammachine R01 (ONE) | All-around race (pro) | ≈800 g (size 54) | Aero-influenced, ICS cockpit; Tudor pro bike | 30 mm | ≈$11,000 (Red AXS) |
| Teammachine R01 (TWO/THREE) | All-around race | ≈830 g (size 54) | Same frame; Ultegra Di2 or 105 Di2 | 30 mm | ≈$5,500 |
| Teammachine FR | Previous-gen race | ≈820 g (size 54) | Discontinued flagship; discounted | 28 mm | ≈$4,500 |
| Roadmachine 01 (ONE) | Endurance (MTT) | ≈910 g (size 54) | MTT micro-suspension; 33 mm clearance | 33 mm | ≈$9,000 (Red AXS) |
| Roadmachine 01 (TWO/THREE) | Endurance (MTT) | ≈940 g (size 54) | Same MTT; Ultegra/105 Di2 | 33 mm | ≈$5,000 |

MTT — BMC's micro-suspension
MTT (Micro Travel Technology) is an elastomer-based micro-suspension at the seatstay/seat tube junction. The seatstays connect to the seat tube via a compliant elastomer block, allowing ≈10 mm of vertical flex. There's no pivot, no bearing, no maintenance — the elastomer does all the work.
MTT is on the Roadmachine (road endurance) and the URS (gravel). It's NOT on the Teammachine (race bikes are rigid for maximum efficiency). The MTT elastomer is replaceable (different durometers for different rider weights), but most riders never touch it.
Compared to competitors: Trek IsoSpeed (mechanical pivot, tunable on Domane SLR), Specialized Future Shock (suspension in the steerer, 20 mm travel). BMC MTT (elastomer, 10 mm, maintenance-free). MTT provides the least travel of the three but is the simplest and lightest.

Gravel — Kaius and URS
Kaius: BMC's gravel race bike, designed for Unbound and gravel racing. Rigid (no MTT), lightweight, aggressive geometry. 44 mm tire clearance. The Kaius is for riders who want maximum speed — it's the bike of BMC's gravel pro team.
URS (UnRestricted): BMC's adventure gravel bike, with MTT micro-suspension, 45 mm tire clearance, and a more relaxed geometry. The URS is for riders who prioritize comfort on long days over pure race speed. Available in carbon (01/02/03) and alloy (AL). The URS is the direct competitor to the Specialized Diverge and Canyon Grizl.
BMC gravel family. Two distinct platforms: Kaius (race, rigid) and URS (adventure, MTT suspension).
| Model | Category | Carbon grade | Tire clearance | Suspension | Starting price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kaius 01 | Gravel race (pro) | Premium Carbon | 44 mm (700c) | None (rigid, lightweight) | ≈$8,500 (Red AXS XPLR) |
| Kaius 02 | Gravel race | Standard Carbon | 44 mm (700c) | None | ≈$5,000 (Force AXS XPLR) |
| URS 01 | Adventure gravel (pro) | Premium Carbon | 45 mm (700c) | MTT micro-suspension (10 mm) | ≈$8,000 (Force AXS XPLR) |
| URS 02/03 | Adventure gravel | Standard Carbon | 45 mm (700c) | MTT | ≈$4,000 (Rival AXS XPLR) |
| URS AL | Adventure gravel (alloy) | Alloy | 45 mm (700c) | MTT | ≈$2,200 (GRX 400) |

Mountain — Fourstroke and Twostroke
Fourstroke: BMC's XC full-suspension race bike, 100/100 mm. The unique feature is the autodrop — a seatpost that automatically lowers based on gradient (detected via a handlebar sensor). When the trail points downhill, the post drops; when it climbs, it rises. It's the only production bike with an auto-lowering seatpost. The Fourstroke is the bike of BMC's (small) XC pro team.
Twostroke: BMC's XC hardtail, available in carbon or alloy. The Twostroke is the volume XC bike — 100 mm fork, race geometry. The Threestroke is the entry alloy version.
BMC MTB family. Fourstroke has the unique autodrop seatpost; Twostroke/Threestroke are hardtails.
| Model | Category | Travel (F/R) | Wheel size | Key feature | Starting price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fourstroke LT | XC full-suspension (race) | 100 / 100 mm | 29" | Autodrop auto-lowering seatpost | ≈$7,500 (XX1 AXS) |
| Fourstroke 01/02 | XC full-suspension | 100 / 100 mm | 29" | Autodrop; lighter tiers | ≈$5,000 (XT) |
| Twostroke | XC hardtail | 100 mm (F only) | 29" | Carbon or alloy | ≈$2,500 (carbon) |
| Threestroke | Entry hardtail | 100 mm (F only) | 29" or 27.5" | Alloy | ≈$1,200 |

BMC's engineering identity
impec Lab: BMC's in-house R&D facility in Grenchen, Switzerland. The impec Lab includes a wind tunnel, fatigue testing rigs, and the 'Article 1' bespoke frame program (custom frames built to individual rider measurements, at a very high price). The impec Lab is BMC's answer to Canyon's aero lab and Specialized's Win Tunnel.
ICS (Integrated Cockpit System): BMC's one-piece carbon bar+stem, found on Teammachine and Roadmachine 01 tiers. Internal cable routing through the headset. The ICS stem is adjustable in length on the Roadmachine (not on the Teammachine).
Swiss engineering identity: BMC leans heavily on Swiss engineering precision in its marketing — the impec Lab, the in-house testing, the Grenchen location (also home to the Tissot velodrome). This positions BMC as the 'engineering boutique' alongside Factor, vs. the 'heritage' positioning of Colnago/Bianchi or the 'volume' positioning of Giant/Merida.
