Weight on the Wheels Counts Twice
Rotating mass is felt on every acceleration. On a 10km climb with 20 switchbacks, you accelerate out of every corner — light wheels matter more here than on a flat time trial. A 1,300g climbing wheelset feels different than a 1,600g aero wheelset on a 10% grade in a way that numbers don't fully capture.
Tire weight matters too. A 250g light casing climbs faster than a 320g puncture-protection belt of the same width. For climbing events, run the lightest tire you trust for the conditions.

Saddle Position for Climbing

Do the Weight Math Honestly
Bike weight matters on climbs in direct proportion to gradient. On a 5% grade, a 1kg difference costs about 6 seconds per 10 minutes of climbing. On a 10% grade, that's 12 seconds. Multiplied across a 2,000m climbing day, the differences add up — but they're smaller than fitness and pacing.
Don't sacrifice comfort or confidence for weight. A 200g lighter bike that you can't descend confidently is a slower bike. The clock starts at the bottom of the climb and ends at the top of the descent.

Position for Switchback Climbs
On tight alpine switchbacks, you'll be out of the saddle every corner. A position that's too aggressive (long and low) makes standing out of the saddle tiring. A slightly shorter reach and higher front end is faster on switchback-heavy climbs because you can stand and accelerate without straining.
Tire width affects grip on switchbacks. A 26mm tire at 80 PSI on a 12% switchback breaks traction; a 28mm tire at 70 PSI holds the line. The wider tire also lets you descend with more confidence — you climb on power, descend on grip.
