Weight on the Wheels Counts Twice

Rotating mass is felt on every acceleration. On a 10km climb with 20 switchbacks, you accelerate out of every corner — light wheels matter more here than on a flat time trial. On tight alpine switchbacks, you'll be out of the saddle every corner. A position that's too aggressive (long and low) makes standing out of the saddle tiring. A slightly shorter reach and higher front end is faster on switchback-heavy climbs because you can stand and accelerate without straining.

Tire width affects grip on switchbacks. A 26mm tire at 80 PSI on a 12% switchback breaks traction; a 28mm tire at 70 PSI holds the line. The wider tire also lets you descend with more confidence — you climb on power, descend on grip.
