- Clipless = you're clipped in. SPD (2-bolt, recessed) for commuting/gravel/beginners; SPD-SL (3-bolt, road) for dedicated road riders.
- Float matters: Shimano yellow cleats give 6° of float (start here), blue gives more float for sensitive knees, red 0° is fixed and for racers only.
- Set pedal tension to the lightest setting. Practice clipping in and out 50 times against a wall before your first real ride.
- Everyone falls once. Usually at a stoplight, in front of witnesses. Get up, clip back in, ride on.

What 'Clipless' Means
The naming is backwards: 'clipless' pedals are the ones you clip into. They're called clipless because they replaced the old toe clips and straps that predated them. The system uses a small cleat bolted to the bottom of your shoe that locks into the pedal with a spring mechanism.
You unclip by twisting your heel outward. The connection is what makes climbing, sprinting, and pedaling circles feel different — and what makes falling over at stoplights a rite of passage.

SPD vs SPD-SL: Which First?
Shimano clipless systems compared
| System | Bolt Pattern | Best For | Walkability | Common Use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SPD | 2-bolt | Commuting, gravel, touring, beginners | Recessed cleat — easy to walk in | Mountain, gravel, commuting |
| SPD-SL | 3-bolt | Road cycling, racing, long days | Cleat protrudes — slippery on tile | Road biking |
| Look Keo | 3-bolt | Road cycling (alternative to SPD-SL) | Similar to SPD-SL | Road, popular in Europe |

Cleats and Float
Float is how much your heel can move while clipped in. Shimano cleats use a color code: yellow gives 6° of float (the default, and what most riders should start with); blue offers more float for sensitive knees (verify degrees on the box, varies by model); red is 0° fixed and racers-only — don't start here.
If you have any knee issues, ask at the bike shop about multi-release or higher-float cleats. Cleat position on the shoe matters too: ball of the foot over the pedal axle is the starting point. A professional bike fit will dial in cleat fore/aft and angle.

Setting Up and Practicing
Set pedal tension to the lightest setting — there's an adjustment screw on the pedal. Most Shimano pedals come light from the factory; leave it. Practice clipping in and out 50 times leaning against a wall or in a doorway before your first ride.
On the bike: unclip one foot (usually your dominant foot) before you need to stop. As you approach a stoplight, unclip at 5 mph, not 0. Coast the last few seconds with one foot ready.

You Will Fall Once
Almost everyone falls once learning clipless. It happens at a stop sign, in front of an audience, in slow motion. You forget to unclip, you stop, you tip. Get up, check the bike, clip back in. It's a one-time tax.
After two weeks of regular riding, clipping in and out becomes automatic. After a month, you'll stop thinking about it entirely — which is the whole point. Clipless pedals make you a better cyclist, full stop. The awkward first week is worth it.
