- Canada's road season is genuinely short — June to September for the Rockies, mid-May to October for southern Quebec and Ontario.
- Signature climbs include the Mount Norquay and Highwood Pass roads in Alberta, Cypress Mountain above Vancouver, and Mont-Mégantic in Quebec.
- Driver behaviour is broadly European-friendly — Quebec and British Columbia have the strongest cycling cultures; rural Alberta is the most mixed.
- Winter doesn't end the sport — fat-biking in Quebec and the Prairies is its own discipline, with snow-packed trails from December to March.

Why Canada rewards cyclists
Canada's sheer size means the riding is regional, not national. The mountain riding of the Rockies, the rolling farm country of southern Quebec, the coastal touring of Cape Breton, and the rainforest roads of Vancouver Island are four completely different trips. What they share is clean tarmac, sparse traffic outside the Windsor–Quebec corridor, and a riding season that compresses everything into a few intense months.
Cycling culture runs deep in Quebec — the Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec et de Montréal (September) brings the WorldTour, and la Route Verte is a 5,300 km signed cycling network across the province. In British Columbia, road, gravel, and mountain biking overlap, and Vancouver's Stanley Park seawall is a daily commute for thousands.

Signature climbs
Canadian paved climbs aren't as long as European cols — most gain 400–800 m — but the scenery compensates, and Highwood Pass is the highest paved road in Canada at 2,206 m.
Five classic Canadian climbs
| Climb | Length | Vertical gain | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mt. Norquay, Banff | 6 km | 430 m | Switchbacks inside the national park |
| Highwood Pass, AB | 15 km | 720 m | Highest paved road in Canada (2,206 m) |
| Mont-Mégantic, QC | 10 km | 570 m | Steady 6–8%, Québec classic |

Touring routes
For multi-day touring, the Cape Breton Cabot Trail (Nova Scotia) is the classic — a roughly 300 km loop around the island with coastal climbs and Acadian fishing villages. The Kettle Valley Rail Trail (BC) is around 600 km of converted rail grade through the Okanagan, mostly gravel and rideable on 32 mm tyres. La Route Verte in Quebec stitches together 5,300 km of signed roads, including the spectacular Saint-Laurent stretch east of Québec City.

When to go
The Rockies open late — Highwood Pass only opens in mid-June because of snow, and closing comes in October. Quebec and Ontario have a longer window: May to October. The Maritimes are best June to September — July and August are reliably warm and the coastal winds stay manageable.
Winter is its own sport. Fat-biking on groomed snow trails is huge in Quebec (Mont-Sainte-Anne, Bromont), the Prairies, and Ontario's cottage country. Cross-country skiing takes over the same trails in between snowfalls, so check the local trail report before you travel.
