Why Colombia is a cycling country

Colombia is the only country in the world where professional cyclists are national celebrities. Long before European races noticed, riders like Lucho Herrera, Santiago Botero, and later Nairo Quintana, Rigoberto Urán, and Egan Bernal were household names. Riding here is part of the culture — every Sunday, the highway out of Bogotá towards La Calera fills with hundreds of cyclists, and the Ciclovía closes around 120 km of city streets to cars from 7 am to 2 pm.

The Andes split into three cordilleras here, and almost every road outside the major cities climbs. Combine that with altitude (Bogotá sits at 2,640 m), a year-round riding climate, and a deep domestic cycling industry, and you have one of the most demanding — and rewarding — road cycling destinations in the world.

Best regions

Most cycling tourism concentrates on three departments — Boyacá, Antioquia, and the Coffee Axis (Caldas, Quindío, Risaralda). Each has its own character.

The signature climbs

Colombian climbs are long rather than steep. Alto de Letras is the legend — roughly 80 km of climbing from Mariquita to the páramo above. Bring low gears and patience.

Altitude and logistics

If you fly into Bogotá at 2,640 m, give yourself three to four days before attempting anything serious. Hydrate aggressively, eat light, and skip alcohol. Most amateur visitors find that anything above 3,000 m requires real pacing — 100 W less than sea-level threshold is normal.

Road surfaces are generally good on main routes; secondary Andean roads are often chip-seal. Avoid riding at night outside cities, and use established cycling outfitters in Medellín (El Poblado) or Bogotá (Usaquén) for bike rental — Ride Colombia, Bogotá Bike Tours, and a handful of boutique operators are all reputable.

When to go

Colombia's climate is roughly equatorial — temperature varies more with altitude than season. But rainfall is seasonal: the two dry windows are December to February and late June to September. The October–November rainy season can wash out secondary roads and turn descents sketchy.

If you're coming from sea level, plan a ten-day trip: three days of acclimatisation, six days of riding, one rest day. Anything shorter and you'll be fighting your lungs rather than the mountains.
