- The USA has no single cycling season — Colorado's window is June–September, the Southwest is best in spring and autumn, and the Deep South can be ridden year-round.
- Signature paved climbs include Mt. Evans (3,651 m) and Pikes Peak in Colorado, Haleakalā in Maui, and Mt. Washington in New Hampshire.
- Gravel riding has reshaped the sport here — Unbound (Kansas) and the Mid South (Oklahoma) are the headline events, but every state has dirt.
- Driver behaviour varies by state — Texas and Florida are statistically the least friendly; Colorado, Oregon, and Vermont the most.

Why the USA is five cycling countries
The United States is too big to treat as one cycling destination. The riding in Vermont's Green Mountains has nothing in common with the California coast, the red rock of Sedona, or the alpine passes of Colorado — except the casual availability of clean tarmac and cheap rentals. The sport has boomed since the pandemic, with gravel and bikepacking pulling thousands of new riders in, and domestic brands like Specialized, Trek, and Cervélo dominating the high end.
Driver behaviour varies more than in Europe. Cycling-friendly states (Oregon, Colorado, California, Vermont) have 3-foot passing laws that are mostly respected. In Texas, Florida, and parts of the South, expect hostility on narrow rural roads and stick to marked cycling routes or rail-trails.

Gravel and bikepacking
Gravel riding is the most American form of cycling. The sport was built on Kansas's Flint Hills, Oklahoma's red dirt, and the farm roads of Iowa. Unbound (around 200 miles through Kansas in early June) is the world championship of the discipline; the Mid South (Oklahoma, March) is the spring opener.
For bikepacking, the headline routes are the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route (Banff to the Mexican border, around 4,400 km), the TransAm, and the Arizona Trail. The Adventure Cycling Association publishes maps for all of them and remains the single best planning resource for long US routes.

When to go
There is no single answer. June to September is the Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana window — above 2,500 m, expect afternoon thunderstorms. April to June and September to October are the desert windows (Sedona, Tucson, Moab). California's coast is rideable year-round but rainy December to March.
The Vermont, North Carolina, and Virginia summer window runs June to October. In the Deep South, ride December to March to escape the heat and humidity — Texas Hill Country and the Florida Panhandle are at their best then.
