Active vs passive visibility

Passive visibility is anything that relies on a driver's light source to work — white or hi-vis clothing, reflective panels, reflectors. Active visibility is anything that emits its own light: front and rear lights, day or night.

The distinction matters because most car-cyclist collisions happen in daylight, when passive hi-vis does almost nothing. The driver's brain is already saturated with bright colours. A flashing light, in contrast, breaks the visual noise.

Front light specs that matter

Lumens are a marketing number. Beam pattern, beam colour, and runtime at full output tell you far more about whether a light will actually do its job.

For unlit-road night riding, look for a beam with a defined hot spot and a wide spill, a neutral tint (around 5000K), and a runtime rating at the output you will actually use, not the eco mode. For urban commuting, a narrower beam with a strong daylight flash is more useful than raw throw.

Rear light strategy

The rear light is your single most important piece of visibility equipment. Run one at minimum, two is better, and a helmet-mounted rear light is the strongest single upgrade you can make — it sits above car roofs and shows through windscreens.

Use a flashing pattern at dusk and at night, steady in dense fog. The old rule still holds: if you can only afford one light, buy the rear.

Reflective placement and bio-motion

Reflective material is most effective when it moves. Ankles, pedals, and shoes rotate through the driver's visual field and trigger the brain's motion-detection system. A static reflective vest is fine; reflective ankle bands are dramatically better.

Rain, fog and dusk — the high-risk windows

Dusk is the most dangerous visibility window. Your eyes have not fully dark-adapted, drivers' eyes have not either, and the ambient light hides the contrast of your lights. Run both lights on full from 30 minutes before sunset.

In fog, switch rear lights to steady. A flashing light in fog appears as a confusing strobe; a steady light reads as a position. In heavy rain, slow down — visibility for everyone drops, and your braking distance doubles.
