- Gravel racing is mass-start racing on unpaved roads (gravel, dirt, fire roads). Distances range from 30 miles (entry) to 350 miles (Unbound XL). Most events are self-supported — you carry your own food, water, and repair kit
- Training focus: endurance (the events are long — 4–10+ hours), fueling practice (eat 60–90 g/hr consistently), and bike handling on loose surfaces. Threshold power matters less than in road racing; sustained endurance matters more
- Gear that matters: tubeless (non-negotiable — pinch flats end races), wide tires (40–50mm), a GPS for navigation (courses are often unmarked), and enough carrying capacity (bottle cages, frame bag) for self-supported distance
- Unbound 200 (Emporia, Kansas, June) is the gravel world championship — 200 miles of Flint Hills gravel. Qualifying is by lottery; finishing requires 5,000+ km of training, perfect fueling, and mental toughness for 10–14 hours

The gravel racing landscape
Gravel race distances and what each requires.
| Distance | Duration | What it takes | Entry level |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30–50 miles | 2–4 hours | Fitness to ride 3h + gravel bike handling | Beginner-friendly |
| 75–100 miles | 4–7 hours | Endurance + fueling + self-support | Intermediate |
| Unbound 200 (322 km) | 10–14 hours | 6+ months training + perfect execution | Advanced |
| Unbound XL (350 mi) | 20–30 hours | Multi-day ultra-endurance | Expert |

Training for gravel
Gravel racing rewards endurance over power. While road racing is about threshold and sprinting, gravel is about sustained Zone 2 for hours — the ability to ride steadily at a moderate pace for 4–10 hours without blowing up. The training: build a massive aerobic base (consistent long rides, 3–5 hours), add one threshold session per week (for the sustained climbs), and practice fueling on every long ride.
The fueling practice is non-negotiable. Gravel races are long enough that bonking (glycogen depletion) is the #1 reason riders DNF. You need to consume 60–90 g of carbs per hour for 4–10 hours — and your gut has to be trained to absorb that. Practice on every training ride over 2 hours. If you can't fuel consistently in training, you can't fuel on race day.
Gravel handling: practice on loose surfaces (gravel, dirt, grass). Cornering on gravel is different from road — the bike slides. Learn to trust the slide, weight the outside pedal, and look through the corner. Descending on gravel requires more caution and lighter braking than on road.

Gear checklist
Gravel race gear — the items that make or break your race.
| Item | Why it matters | Non-negotiable? |
|---|---|---|
| Tubeless tires (40–50mm) | Pinch flats and punctures end races; sealant prevents 90%+ | Yes |
| GPS computer (with route loaded) | Courses are often unmarked; navigation errors lose hours | Yes |
| 2+ bottle cages (or hydration pack) | Self-supported = you carry your water; 4+ hours between aid stations | Yes |
| Frame bag / top tube bag | Carry food, tools, spare layer for long distances | Yes |
| Plug kit + 2 spare tubes | For cuts sealant can't plug | Yes |
| Backup light | If you're slow, you may finish in the dark | For 100+ mile events |

Unbound 200 — the big one
Unbound Gravel (Emporia, Kansas, early June) is the Super Bowl of gravel racing. The 200-mile (322 km) distance is the flagship; there are also 100, 50, and 25-mile options. Entry is by lottery (opens in November; fills in minutes).
Finishing Unbound 200 requires: 5,000+ km of training in the preceding 6 months (including multiple 5+ hour rides), a bike set up for reliability (tubeless, fresh tires, freshly serviced drivetrain), a fueling plan tested in training (90+ g carbs/hr for 10+ hours), and mental preparation for 10–14 hours of sustained effort on Kansas Flint Hills gravel (sharp rocks that shred tires).
The race itself: start conservatively (the first 50 miles feel easy because of the adrenaline and draft — resist the urge to push), fuel from mile 1, pace for the back half (the last 50 miles are where the race is won or lost — and where most riders crack), and have a backup plan for mechanicals (tire plugs, tubes, a multi-tool). Unbound is as much an execution test as a fitness test.
