Reading the rim: lateral then radial

Mount the wheel, zero the indicator close to the rim, and spin. Mark the worst lateral deviation with a piece of tape. Find the spoke or pair of spokes opposite the high spot — those are the ones to tighten, or the ones on the high side to loosen. The rule of thumb is a quarter-turn at a time, alternating left and right if both sides need work, and never more than a half-turn before re-checking.

Dish, stress relief, and final settle

Drop a dishing tool on both sides. If the rim is off-center, tighten all drive-side spokes by a quarter turn and loosen all non-drive by the same amount, then re-check. Never re-dish by chasing one side.

Before calling it done, stress-relieve: squeeze parallel spoke pairs hard, working around the wheel. You will hear pings — that's the nipples settling into their seats.
