  • You can replace one broken spoke in 15 minutes without removing the tire if you carry a 14G spare and a Park SW-0 spoke wrench.
  • Tension matters more than trueness: a 90-110 kgf drive-side spoke holds; a 50 kgf one loosens in 200km.
  • Relieve spoke windup by hand-twisting opposite to the torsional set after every quarter-turn of the nipple.
  • Brass nipples outlast alloy by 3-5x and don't seize — use alloy only on race wheels where every gram counts.

When a single spoke is enough

A single spoke snapping is usually a one-off — a rock strike, a stick flicked into the wheel, or a manufacturing defect that finally let go. If two or three break in the same quadrant, the rim is taco'd or the tension is wildly uneven, and replacing spokes won't fix the underlying problem.

If the wheel still spins reasonably true and the adjacent spokes are within 20% of spec, you can replace just the broken one and re-tension. I'd only rebuild a wheel that's had four or more failures in the same area.

Tools and the trail kit

Required: a spoke wrench matching your nipple size (Park SW-0 for 14G, SW-1 for 14/15G butted, SW-3 for 15G, SW-7 for 13G), a nipple driver or flathead, and a tensiometer if you can borrow one. A spare 260-280mm spoke rolled up in your pack weighs nothing and saves a long walk.

Removal and threading

Remove the tire and rim strip if the nipple won't drop out the rim bed — tubeless setups require this. Unthread the broken spoke from the hub. If it's a rear drive-side spoke, you may need to remove the cassette (Park FR-5 plus a chain whip) to clear the flange. Thread the new spoke through the same hole pattern as the old one, matching the cross pattern exactly — a wrong lacing pattern produces a visible hop.

Lubricate the nipple threads with a drop of light oil before threading it on. This matters more than people think: dry nipples seize after a season of weather, and the next adjustment strips the flats.

Tension and windup

Butted spokes (2.0/1.8/2.0mm) wind up under torque — the middle section twists before the nipple tightens. After every quarter-turn of tightening, grab the spoke with your fingers and twist it back against the windup direction. If you skip this, the spoke unwinds on the first ride, drops tension, and the nipple backs out.

Bring the new spoke up to the same pitch as its neighbors — ping them with the wrench and match the tone. A tensiometer is more accurate but the pitch trick gets you within 10% on a wheel that was built correctly to start with.
