Reach vs stem length: what each one actually is

Reach is a frame geometry number. It measures the horizontal distance from the bottom-bracket centre to the top of the head tube, and it's set when the frame is welded or moulded. A 54 cm road frame might have a 380 mm reach; a 56 cm frame 395 mm. You cannot change reach without changing the frame.

How stem length changes handling

A stem is a lever. The steering axis sits at the steerer; the handlebar is the end of the lever. A longer stem gives the rider more leverage over the front wheel, which slows the steering response — small bar inputs translate to smaller wheel movements. A shorter stem does the opposite: the wheel turns more for the same bar input, so the bike feels twitchy and quick.

Length also shifts your body weight. A longer stem moves your centre of gravity forward, loading the front wheel — good for grip in corners and on climbs, bad in crosswinds and on steep descents where you already have too much weight on the front. Finding the right length

Start with the stem the bike came with and ride it for at least a month. Going from 100 mm to 90 mm shortens cockpit reach, unweights the hands, and quickens the steering — usually the right direction for riders with back or hand pain. Going from 100 to 110 mm stretches you out, loads the front wheel, and calms the steering — better for tall riders on undersized frames or for high-speed stability. Don't go past ±20 mm from stock without reconsidering frame size: a stem cannot rescue a badly sized frame.
