A wheel is a tension structure, not a compression one. Spokes pull the rim toward the hub; the rim hangs in equilibrium. To build or service one, you need to measure three independent things: roundness (radial run-out), truth (lateral run-out), and tension (per spoke) — and a fourth to make sure the rim ends up centred over the hub.

Each measurement needs its own tool. A truing stand measures roundness and truth simultaneously by holding gauges near the rim while you spin the wheel. Spoke wrench sizing: get this right

Spoke nipples come in a maddening variety of sizes. Using the wrong wrench is the single most common way new wheel builders ruin nipples — a 3.30 mm wrench on a 3.23 mm nipple rounds the flats in two turns, and the nipple is then scrap.

The five common sizes are 3.23 mm (DT Swiss and some Wheelsmith), 3.30 mm (most DT Pro Lock and Sapim), 3.45 mm (some larger DT and Pillar), 3.96 mm / 4.0 mm (Sapim Polyax and some older Mavic), and 5 mm hex internal (modern DT Squorx and Sapim hex-head nipples used on deep-section carbon rims). Buy a set of all four external sizes — the Park master set SW-7 covers them — and use the internal 5 mm hex on the deep carbon wheels that have it.

Reading a tensiometer

A tensiometer pushes against the middle of a spoke with a calibrated spring and measures how far the spoke deflects. The reading is in millimetres of deflection, not in tension directly. You look up the deflection on the chart that came with the tensiometer (each one is calibrated to its own spring and to the spoke's cross-section) and convert to kilograms-force (kgf) or newtons.

Target tensions: road rims 90–120 kgf per spoke on the drive side, 50–70 kgf on the non-drive side (the difference dishes the wheel for the cassette); mountain bike 90–130 kgf drive, 70–90 kgf non-drive. Within a side, match tensions to within 5%. A wheel built to correct average tension but with one spoke at 60 kgf and another at 130 kgf will go out of true within the first 500 km.

Tolerances that define a 'good' build

A finished wheel is judged on three numbers. Lateral true: rim moves no more than 0.5 mm side-to-side when spun in the stand (0.3 mm for high-end carbon). Radial true: rim moves no more than 0.5 mm in and out (0.3 mm for carbon). Dish: rim is centred over the hub locknuts within 0.5 mm — checked by flipping the wheel in the stand or using the dishing tool on both sides. If all three are within spec and spoke tension is balanced within 5%, the wheel will stay true for thousands of kilometres.
