Four kilometres, one decision each lap
An individual pursuit is 4 km for men, 3 km for women, ridden from a standing start against the clock. There is no opponent on your shoulder to react to — the race is between your pacing plan and your aerobic system. The decision every lap is one number: am I above or below target split.
Splits are tracked every 250m lap and the time you should be hitting is decided before the race, not during. The classical plan is even splits, but elite pursuiters typically ride a slight negative split — the second half a touch faster than the first — because a too-fast start produces lactate that cannot be cleared inside four minutes.

Why the second kilometre kills most pursuits
Through the second kilometre the rider has cleared the lactic acid load from the start but hasn't yet reached the aerobic ceiling that defines the rest of the effort. Target pace feels much easier than it did in the first lap — and that's the trap. Riders loosen up and start running 0.2–0.4 seconds per lap above target. Four laps of that is a second and a half, and at the elite level that's the difference between a medal and seventh place.
The fix is to pace the second kilometre on a fixed cadence target, not on perception. If your start left you at 105% of threshold heart rate, you will settle; that does not mean slow down. Pursuiters who use lap-time beepers or a coach calling splits almost always beat pursuiters running on feel for exactly this reason.

Standing start and the first lap
The start is the single most expensive moment of a pursuit: a typical elite start costs roughly 18–22 seconds for the first 250m, then 14–16 seconds for each subsequent lap. Riders who start too hard produce a lactate load they pay for in the second half; riders who start too soft give up time they can never claw back. The standing-start drill — measured, repeatable, similar to a 100m sprint start with a holder — is something pursuiters train weekly.
