Three pumps, three jobs

The track pump (also called a floor pump) lives by the door. You use it before every ride to top off pressure — tires lose 5–10 psi per week through normal permeability. It has a big chamber, a tall barrel, an accurate gauge, and a stable base you stand on. It is the pump that does 95% of the work.

The mini pump lives in a jersey pocket or saddle bag. It is small enough to carry on every ride and slow enough that you only use it when you have a flat. Valve types and the dual head

Presta valves (narrow, threaded, with a locknut) are standard on road and higher-end bikes. Schrader valves (wider, spring-loaded, like a car tire) are standard on cheaper bikes and most mountain bikes. A pump worth owning handles both without an adapter — usually via a dual-head that clamps either type, or a flip-around chuck.

The head design matters more than people think. A thread-on head (screws onto the Presta locknut) is secure but slow. A push-on lever head (push down, flip the lever to lock) is faster and works with one hand. Gauges, accuracy, and hose quality

The gauge on a floor pump is the spec that separates a good pump from a bad one. Analog dial gauges are common and adequate; digital gauges are more accurate and easier to read at low pressure (under 30 psi, where mountain bike pressure lives). Calibrate against a known reference occasionally — many floor pumps read 5–10 psi off.

A long, flexible hose means you can pump without stressing the valve stem. A short, stiff hose bends the valve and shortens its life — especially on Presta, where the brass body is fragile. A replaceable hose is worth paying for; hoses crack after 3–5 years of being bent.
