Why Rotor Diameter Matters
A brake rotor does two jobs. It is the friction surface the pads squeeze against, and it is the heat sink that absorbs the kinetic energy of braking. Both scale with size. A larger rotor has more surface area for the pads to grip, more leverage (because the friction force acts further from the hub axis), and more steel mass to absorb heat.
The leverage effect is the more important one. Braking torque is friction force multiplied by the radius at which it acts, so a 180 mm rotor gives about 28 percent more braking torque than a 140 mm for the same pad squeeze. The thermal effect matters too: doubling the rotor diameter roughly triples the heat capacity, because the heat distributes through a much larger mass of steel.

Front Versus Rear Sizing
Under braking, weight transfers forward. The front wheel carries more load, the front brake does more work — typically 65 to 70 percent of total braking force — and the front rotor runs hotter. The sensible pattern is to size the front rotor one step larger than the rear. A 160 mm front / 140 mm rear setup is normal on road; 180/160 on gravel; 203/180 on enduro.
Symmetric setups (same size both ends) are common on road racing bikes, where the aero and weight penalty of a 160 mm rotor on the rear is judged not worth paying. Mounting Standards and Adapters
Rotors bolt to the hub in one of two ways. Six-bolt is the older standard — six small M5 bolts thread into the hub shell. Centerlock is Shimano's splined system, where a single lockring (the same one used for cassettes) clamps the rotor to a splined interface. Centerlock is faster to swap and marginally stiffer; six-bolt gives more rotor choice at the lower end of the market.
Caliper-to-frame mounting has its own alphabet of standards. Post mount (PM) is the mountain bike standard — two M6 threaded posts on the fork or frame, with the caliper bolted directly on for the nominal rotor size and via an adapter for larger sizes. Flat mount (FM) is the road and gravel standard, smaller and cleaner but limited in maximum rotor size without adapters. International Standard (IS) is the oldest, rarely seen on new bikes. Choosing: A Practical Decision Tree
Start with rider weight plus bike plus any luggage. Under 75 kg total on a road bike in flat terrain: 140 mm is fine. Heavier, hillier, or gravel: 160 mm front minimum. Over 90 kg, loaded bikepacking, or sustained alpine descending: 180 mm front. Any serious mountain-bike use: 180 mm minimum, 203 mm for enduro or e-bike. If you ride in the wet, upsize — wet brakes dissipate heat less effectively and a larger rotor gives more margin.
When in doubt, go 160 mm. It is the size that almost every bike is designed around, the size that every pad compound is engineered for, and the size that will work adequately across the widest range of conditions. Larger is always an upgrade you can make later with a cheap adapter; smaller is usually a frame-clearance problem you cannot easily solve.
