Seated vs standing

Seated climbing is more efficient for sustained efforts. When seated, you recruit the larger glute muscles (which have more endurance than the quads), your weight is lower and centered (better traction on steep grades), and you burn less energy per watt because you're not supporting your body weight on the bars. For most climbs — anything over 3–5 minutes — seated is the default.

Standing is for specific moments: short accelerations (attacking, responding to a surge), very steep pitches (above 12–15%, where you need body weight over the crank), and relieving muscle fatigue (standing recruits different muscles, giving the seated muscles a brief rest). The gradient looks manageable, the legs feel fresh, and you push a tempo that feels sustainable — until it isn't, halfway up, when you're forced to slow dramatically. This is 'positive splitting' — going out too hard and fading. It's slower than the alternative.

Negative split instead: start the climb at a pace that feels almost too easy. If you feel good at the halfway mark (or at the point where the climb steepens or gets harder), accelerate. You can always go harder later; you can't recover from going too hard early. This is how the best climbers ride — conservatively at the base, then increasing the pace as the climb goes on.

If you have a power meter, climb at a target power (threshold for a 20-min climb, tempo for a 40-min climb) and resist the urge to push harder on the easier lower slopes. If you don't have power, use perceived effort: aim for an effort where you can still breathe in rhythm (not gasping) for the first two-thirds of the climb.

Gear selection

Shift before the pitch changes, not during. A shift under torque on a steep grade is when chains drop, gears skip, and momentum stalls. Anticipate the gradient: as the road tilts up, shift to an easier gear before you need it. If you wait until you're grinding at 40 rpm, it's too late — the shift will be rough and you'll lose momentum.

Target cadence: 80–90 rpm on moderate climbs (sustainable, aerobic), 70–80 rpm on steeper pitches (more force per stroke, but still manageable). Below 60 rpm ('grinding') is inefficient for most riders — you're pushing too big a gear, recruiting fewer muscle fibers, and fatiguing faster. If your cadence drops below 70 on a climb and you have an easier gear, use it.

Weight and power-to-weight ratio

Climbing is about power-to-weight ratio — watts per kilogram. A 70 kg rider producing 300 W climbs at 4.3 W/kg; an 80 kg rider at the same 300 W climbs at 3.75 W/kg. The lighter rider goes faster uphill at the same power. This is why climbers are light.

Two ways to improve climbing: raise your power (train) or lower your weight (lose fat). Both work; both have limits.
