Training for crits

Crits demand two specific fitness qualities: (1) Threshold — the ability to sustain near-FTP for an hour. A crit is essentially a 60-minute time trial with surges. Your FTP is the floor. (2) Repeatability — the ability to surge to 150%+ FTP, recover in 5–15 seconds, and repeat dozens of times. This is the skill that lets you follow attacks and exit corners without getting dropped.

The training: threshold work (3×10 min at FTP, weekly) raises the floor. Anaerobic repeat work (10×30 sec at 150% FTP with 30 sec recovery, weekly) builds the ceiling. Survival skills

Cornering: the single most important skill in a crit. A rider who exits corners smoothly (no unnecessary braking, carrying speed through) saves enormous energy vs a rider who brakes and sprints out of every corner. Practice cornering on a closed circuit: find a parking lot, set up a figure-8, and practice carrying speed through the turns at progressively higher speeds.

Positioning: fight for the front 10–15 positions in the first 5 minutes. Once you're there, it's easier to stay (the front rides smoothly; the back is chaos). If you drift back, getting forward again costs 5× the energy of staying there. Hold your wheel — if a gap opens in front of you, close it immediately. Gaps only grow.
