Electronic and wireless
Electronic shifting has moved from the pro-only exotic to the mid-tier standard. Shimano 105 Di2 (the third-tier groupset) is electronic; SRAM Rival AXS (third-tier) is wireless electronic. Mechanical shifting now exists mainly at the budget (Tiagra, Apex) and entry tiers — the writing is on the wall for cable-actuated derailleurs.
Wireless: SRAM's AXS platform was wireless from the start (no frame wiring — the shifters and derailleurs each have their own batteries). Shimano's Di2 has historically used a frame battery with wires to the derailleurs, but newer Shimano systems are moving wireless for the shifters. Wireless simplifies frame manufacturing (no internal routing of gear cables) and lets riders customize without a mechanic.
The remaining electronic frontier: integration. Head units (Garmin, Wahoo, Hammerhead) now connect to shifting (showing gear position, battery level), power meters, and radar. The bike is becoming a networked device. The downside: complexity and battery management. A dead battery means no shifting, no power data, no radar.

Disc brakes — the settled debate
The disc vs rim brake debate is over — disc won. Every new road bike from every major manufacturer (Trek, Specialized, Giant, Cannondale, Pinarello) is disc-only. Rim brakes survive only on retro builds, track bikes, and ultra-light climbing specials (where the marginal weight saving still appeals to weight weenies).
The remaining brake discussions: rotor size (140mm vs 160mm — 160 front is becoming standard for better heat dissipation on descents), pad compounds (organic vs sintered for wet/dry conditions), and the Shimano mineral oil vs SRAM DOT fluid debate (Shimano is easier to maintain; SRAM offers better modulation). Both hydraulic disc brake systems are now mature, reliable, and powerful — the brake wars are done.

What's hype vs what matters
Matters for regular riders: wider tires at lower pressure (the single biggest comfort and grip improvement in modern cycling — free speed and comfort). Tubeless (fewer punctures, lower pressures). Disc brakes (consistent stopping in all conditions). These three trends genuinely make riding better.
Hype (or marginal): aero frame tube shapes (the difference between a good aero frame and a great one is 5–10 watts — measurable in a wind tunnel, invisible on the road). Ceramic bearings (saves ~1 watt, costs $500+). Oversized pulley wheel systems (saves 1–2 watts, costs $300+). These appeal to racers and weight weenies but don't meaningfully improve the riding experience. Spend on a bike fit and good tires before spending on aero ceramics.
