Why the front derailleur is so finicky
The front derailleur moves the chain across rings that differ by 10–16 teeth in a single shift, with the chain under full pedaling load. Small misalignments in cage height, angle, or cable tension translate into slow shifts, dropped chains, and chain rub that no amount of limit-screw twiddling fixes. The reliable approach is to set mechanical position first, then limit screws, then tension — in that order, every time.

Height and angle: the position that controls everything
Shift to the big ring. The outer cage plate should sit 1–3 mm above the tallest tooth on the big chainring, and the cage's long axis should be parallel to the chainring (not to the chain). A cage that's too high lifts the chain but does not carry it inward; one that's too low drags on the ring and damages the cage.
For braze-on mounts, check that the derailleur's body sits flat on the tab — a missing or wrong-size shim introduces a twist that no amount of cable tension will overcome. For band clamp mounts, the 6 mm bolt on the back of the derailleur sets rotation; the cage should be parallel to the chainring when viewed from above.

Limit screws: gates, not trim
Shift to the small ring and slack the cable. The inner cage plate should clear the chain by 1–2 mm. If it is closer, back the low (L) limit screw out a quarter turn. If the chain can fall inward off the small ring, tighten the L screw. Then tension the cable (pull firmly by hand and tighten the anchor bolt) and shift to the big ring. The outer cage plate should sit just outside the chain, 1–2 mm. Use the high (H) screw to adjust.
Limit screws do not trim the chain inboard once you are in a ring — that is a tension or trim-click problem. The newer Shimano and SRAM front mechs have a half-click or auto-trim position that takes chain rub out of the equation when cross-chaining; reach for the barrel adjuster first, never the limit screw.

Cable tension and indexing
With limits set, shift down to the small ring. Pull the cable taut by hand and snug the anchor bolt. Pedal by hand and shift up. If the shift stalls, add tension via the barrel adjuster in quarter-turn increments. If the chain overshoots and drops off the outside, back tension out and check the H limit.
A new cable stretches in the first 100 km. Expect to add a couple of quarter-turns to the barrel in the first weeks. If tension keeps disappearing, the cable is fraying inside the housing — pull it out and inspect before chasing shifts.

Di2 front synchronised shifting
Shimano Synchro Shift moves the front derailleur automatically at a chosen rear cog, removing the front shifter entirely if you want. Setup is the same mechanically — height, angle, limits — but the B-tension and rear derailleur setup interact because shifts are sequenced. The E-Tube app lets you choose the trigger cog. The trap is choosing too small a cog: the chain is at its tightest in big-big, and a synchronised shift into that combination can damage the derailleur. Always set the trigger cog in the middle third of the cassette.
