When to true
True your wheel when: you can see it wobble side-to-side as it spins (put the bike in a stand or flip it over and spin the wheel while watching the gap between the rim and the brake pad), you feel a pulsing through the brake lever while riding (the wobble hits the pad unevenly), or after hitting a pothole or curb. Minor wobbles (1–2mm) are normal on older wheels; a sudden new wobble after an impact needs attention.

The process
1. Set up: put the bike in a stand or flip it. Spin the wheel and find the worst wobble. Position your reference (brake pad or zip-tie) so it barely clears the rim at its closest point.
2. Find the center of the wobble: identify which section of the rim deviates most from center. Note whether it deviates left or right.
3. Adjust: at the center of the deviation, the rim is being pulled toward the side it's closest to. To pull it back to center, tighten spokes on the OPPOSITE side (the side it's farther from) by 1/4 turn, and/or loosen spokes on the SAME side by 1/4 turn. Both work; tightening is preferred (maintains overall tension).
