Direct-drive vs wheel-on: the real differences

Direct-drive is the gold standard for serious training. The bike's chain runs on the trainer's cassette, so there is no tyre slip, no heat build-up in the tyre, and power is measured at the trainer's internal strain gauge (typically +/- 1–2% accurate). Max simulated gradient can hit 25% because the unit can apply serious electromagnetic resistance. The downsides: cost ($700+), weight (15–25 kg, awkward to store), and the need to fit a matching cassette to the trainer.

Wheel-on trainers trade accuracy and resistance for portability and price. The rear tyre presses against a roller; resistance comes from a magnetic unit, a fluid chamber, or wind (the fan type). Smart trainer protocols: how Zwift talks to the trainer

A smart trainer is a controllable load. Zwift, TrainerRoad, Rouvy, and Bkool all use two protocols to set resistance: ANT+ FE-C (Fitness Equipment Control) over ANT+, and FTMS (Fitness Machine Service) over Bluetooth. Either lets the app tell the trainer 'apply 250 W' (ERG mode) or 'apply the resistance a 7% gradient would' (simulation mode).

ERG mode is the killer feature for structured training. The trainer holds the target wattage regardless of your cadence — pedal slower and it adds resistance, pedal faster and it backs off. Accessories that earn their keep

A trainer alone isn't a setup. The accessories that matter: a trainer mat (protects the floor from sweat and dampens vibration noise), a sweat catcher (the band that loops over the top tube — sweat corrodes headset bearings), a fan sized for the rider (a 30 km/h airflow is the difference between a tolerable session and quitting at 40 minutes), and a front-wheel riser block (levels the bike so you're not pitched forward).

If you bought a wheel-on trainer, add a trainer-specific tyre.
