Why it is called the Madison

The Madison - or 'American', as it is still called in parts of Europe - takes its name from Madison Square Garden in New York, where the format was developed in the late 1890s as a way to keep six-day races entertaining through the small hours. Two-rider teams allowed one cyclist to race flat out while the other recovered, and the resulting handover produced the stop-start rhythm that still defines the event today.

It is the most technically demanding race on the track calendar. A team has to coordinate accelerations, manage fatigue across two bodies, and execute a clean physical exchange every one to two laps for an hour or more, all while a full field of equally coordinated teams does the same thing around them.

How the relay works

At any moment only one rider per team is 'in' the race. The resting rider circles high on the track, out of the way. When the active rider is ready to hand over, they sweep up the track, link hands with their partner, and slingshot the rested rider back down into the race line.

The handover itself is called a handsling. Done well, it costs almost no speed and gives the incoming rider a free acceleration. Done poorly, riders miss each other entirely and lose a lap to the field in a single bungled exchange.

How it is scored

Scoring mirrors the points race. Intermediate sprints happen at fixed intervals and award 5/3/2/1 to the top four teams, with the final sprint worth double. The big differentiator is the lap gain: a team that escapes and rejoins the back of the field having covered an extra lap ranks ahead of any team that has not, regardless of sprint points.

Because the resting rider is always available to chase or attack, the Madison produces more breakaway attempts than a standalone points race. The pace is also less steady, as each fresh rider coming in tends to lift the speed for a lap or two before settling.

Team dynamics

Most successful Madison pairings team up a sprinter with an endurance rider. The endurance rider covers moves and fetches laps; the sprinter is preserved for the points sprints and the final. The two have to agree on who is racing at any given moment, who is fetching, and when to commit - which is why established pairs usually beat even talented ad-hoc teams.

Communication is mostly non-verbal. Riders shout split times and positions from the rail, and the team's soigneur stands trackside calling out the gaps. Inside the bunch, the active rider reads their partner's position out of the corner of an eye.

A short history of the format

The Madison was an Olympic men's event from 2000 to 2008, dropped from the programme, then returned in 2020 with a women's event added. At the world championships it has been raced continuously since the 1990s for men and since 2017 for women.

It remains the blue-riband event at six-day races, the commercial track meetings that run across northern Europe each winter. Those meetings are built almost entirely around the Madison, and the riders who win them tend to be specialists: track riders who have spent a career learning the exchange.
