Tubeless — the gold standard
Tubeless is the most effective puncture prevention because the sealant handles 90%+ of common punctures automatically. When a thorn or small piece of glass pierces a tubeless tire, the liquid sealant (inside the tire) flows to the hole and coagulates, sealing it in seconds. You often don't even know you got a puncture — you finish the ride, and find a small dab of dried sealant on the tire afterward.
Setup: you need tubeless-compatible tires and rims (most modern tires and rims are), tubeless valves, and sealant (2–4 ounces per tire). The initial setup (seating the tire bead) can be tricky the first time; once set, maintenance is just refreshing the sealant every 3–6 months. The trade-off: tubeless setup is messier, and a large cut (that the sealant can't plug) requires a tube as backup — always carry one.
