Reading the Wind
Three signals tell you where the wind is coming from: flags at distance (the most reliable), the angle of roadside vegetation, and your own ears — a true crosswind has a hiss a headwind doesn't. Trees, buildings, and embankments channel the wind, so the angle you feel may differ from the open-road angle by 20–40°.
If the wind is from the right at 45°, you want to be on the left side of the rider ahead. Pure crosswind (90°) gives maximum shelter; winds 15–30° off the nose still echelon but produce a longer, thinner formation.

Positioning and Rotation
The pulling rider sits at the front, fully exposed. The next rider tucks in slightly behind and downwind — not directly behind. Each rider behind shifts a half-bike-width further into the shelter, forming the diagonal.

The Gutter: Why It Hurts
An echelon has a fixed capacity — typically 6 to 8 riders before the diagonal runs out of road. The 7th or 9th rider has nowhere to shelter and ends up in the gutter, fully exposed. Power output in the gutter is often 30–40% higher than in the rotation.
This is why splits form in crosswinds: the front group's echelon fills up, the rest hit the gutter, and the elastic snaps. If you find yourself there, your only move is to attack into the front group before the gap opens.

Common Mistakes in Group Rides
The most common fault is overlapping wheels incorrectly — too far forward, which exposes you to the wind and forces the rider behind to swing wide. Aim for your front hub level with the rear hub of the rider upwind, with a hand's width of clearance.
Second fault: pulling too hard when you hit the front. The rotation only works if every rider matches the line's speed. A surge gaps the formation and breaks the rhythm.
Third: drifting back too slowly after pulling. The recovery line should move slower than the pulling line, but if you stall you'll get boxed in at the back and won't be able to slot back in.

Drills for the First Time
Take four trusting riders to a flat, traffic-free road with a known crosswind. Ride as a normal pace line first, then rotate into the echelon shape. The pulling rider calls 'pulling off', soft-pedals, drifts back along the sheltered side, and the next rider comes through. Run it for ten minutes, then swap sides by reversing direction.
Once the shape feels automatic at 25 km/h, raise the pace to 35 km/h. Above 40 km/h the rotation has to be tighter and faster — that's where the technique separates from the theory.
