Shimano vs SRAM MTB — the honest comparison

HYPERGLIDE+ vs Eagle: Shimano's shift ramps prioritize smooth downshifts under power (RAPIDFIRE PLUS multi-release can drop 2-3 gears in one push). SRAM's Eagle shift feel is more positive and mechanical. Shimano shifts lighter and smoother; SRAM shifts more definitively. It's a preference choice, not a performance one.

Freehub lock-in: Shimano MTB 12-speed requires MICRO SPLINE (except Deore HG option). SRAM Eagle 12-speed requires XD (except NX/SX HG option). You cannot swap cassettes between brands without changing the freehub body. Pick your ecosystem carefully.

Di2 vs AXS: XTR Di2 (RD-M9150) has auto-shift capability (via app) and programmable shift maps. SRAM AXS has simpler setup (no wires, clip-on battery). HYPERGLIDE+ (HG+): Shimano's 12-speed cassette ramp profile. The chain engages the next sprocket's shift ramp BEFORE the shift is fully initiated, making downshifts under load significantly smoother. HG+ is the defining shift-feel difference from SRAM Eagle — if you value smooth downshifts on technical climbs, HG+ is the reason to pick Shimano.
