Carb-loading — the nutritional taper

Glycogen (stored carbohydrate in muscles and liver) is the primary fuel for cycling at and above threshold. A tapering rider who reduces training volume AND increases carbohydrate intake tops off glycogen stores above normal — meaning more fuel available on race day.
