The Running Machine (1817)
In 1817, German forest official Karl Drais built the Laufmaschine — literally 'running machine.' Riders straddled a wooden frame on two in-line wheels and pushed off the ground with their feet. There were no pedals, no chain, no brakes. Drais's machine was a direct response to the 1815 eruption of Mount Tambora, which had killed horses across Europe through the resulting 'Year Without a Summer.'
